A Study Of Utopias

Project type: School
Tag(s): Infographic

A study of a selection of utopias that have come into existence in the literary/fictional field dating from as far back as 380 BC till present time. I was intrigued by the longevity of the concept of utopias; despite its inherent futility, the language of utopias is anything but dead.

What do utopias represent?

To seek out answers, I turned to the Society for Utopian Studies where it was mentioned that they release their peer-reviewed publication that covers a wide range of topics written by experts from the following fields:

  1. American studies
  2. Architecture
  3. The Arts
  4. Classics
  5. Cultural studies
  6. Economics
  7. Engineering
  8. Environmental studies
  9. Gender studies
  10. History
  11. Languages and literatures
  12. Philosophy
  13. Political science
  14. Psychology
  15. Sociology
  16. Urban planning

Keeping to the numeric theme of '16,' I looked into 4 time periods (pre 19th century, 19th century, 20th century and 21st century) for 4 utopias each and noted the pattern of the shifting priorities of each time period. I then mapped the results into an infographic form.
